Choosing the right heating and cooling system is essential for ensuring energy efficiency, comfort, and cost-effectiveness in your home. Factors such as your home's size and layout, local climate, and the system's maintenance requirements all play a crucial role in making an informed decision. Additionally, considering the environmental impact, noise levels, and advanced features can enhance your overall satisfaction. A well-selected system not only improves your comfort but can also lead to lower utility bills and increased resale value, making it important to ask the right questions before purchasing.
Asking the right questions
To ensure we can recommend the products that make the most sense for you, your family, your home and your lifestyle, consider the following questions
- Has your home been cold enough during summer and warm enough in the winter?
- How long do you intend to keep your house? Do you see yourself enjoying your system for years, or are you upgrading your system to increase the resale value of your home?
- Have you considered investing more money in your equipment now to save money in long-term energy costs? Or are you looking to save on your up-front equipment costs?
- Do you want the ability to create different temperatures in different rooms throughout your home? If so, how many?
- How important is air quality to you? Does anyone in your home suffer from asthma, allergies or dry skin? Do you have pets in your home?
- Are you concerned about the environment?
Choosing the right sytem
Here are four factors you may want to consider when searching for a heating and cooling system that meets your preferences
- Comfort: Not all heating and air systems include the same comfort features. You’ll want to find the right features for your home, budget and lifestyle. This may include a Wi-Fi thermostat, an integrated humidifier, weather protection features or the ability to create multiple heating and cooling zones.
- Efficiency: You don’t have to sacrifice your utility bill to find a heating and cooling system that can keep you comfortable. Heat pumps provide an ideal and efficient option for many homeowners in our climate. When searching for an efficient system, focus on the SEER rating. A SEER rating of 16 or more often meets the standards for rebates through ENERGY STAR® or your local utility company.
- Sound: If finding a quiet system is your priority, make sure to check the decibel level. Many heating and cooling units measure between 60 and 70 decibels. Some of the quietest heating and cooling systems measure between 50 and 60 decibels. That may not seem like much, but 50 decibels is actually about 75 percent quieter than 70 decibels.
- Environmental impact: While some use the name Freon interchangeably with refrigerant, it’s worth noting that they are not the same. Freon is a refrigerant product that is being phased out and discontinued by the year 2020. If you’re aiming to make an environmentally conscious heating and cooling decision, make sure you’re choosing a system that uses Puron™ (or R-410A) refrigerant or an energy efficient system, such as a Geothermal heat pump.
